A Professional Crown Reduction Will Protect & Extend The Healthy Life Of Your Tree...

Crown Reduction which is often referred to as "Tree Topping" is a way to reduce the size of your tree more safely and stress free.

Tree thinning (known as a thinning cut) is often a solution that works well with people looking for this kind of work.

Further down the page we look at the differences in more detail, but it is sometimes simpler to look at the desired results:

  • To reduce the weight of potentially dangerous limbs and improve the health of the tree.
  • To remove the lower branches which are a hazard.
  • To help balance a misshapen tree that may have suffered storm damage.
  • To prevent trees from obstructing or damaging property.
  • To prevent damage to overhead power and telecom lines (check to see if this work is the responsibility of the utilities).

It is often best to have a chat over the phone to understand what you are looking to achieve so that the best options can be recommended.

Crown Reduction & Thinning vs Tree Topping

Tree Topping & Lopping

These are phrases that we increasingly hear and require careful consideration. It is the practice of removing whole tops of trees or large branches and/or trunks. This can cause significant stress and future safety issues for the following reasons:
  1. The lack of foliage can cause the newly formed bark to suffer from sun scald which is permanent visible damage to the bark.
  2. In many cases it is hoped the process will stimulate new growth. New shoots known as suckers will begin to grow from the wound which is the trees response to the sudden loss of leaves. However, this leaves the tree open to insect attack and fungi which can damage or even kill the tree in extreme cases.
  3. Trees cut back to reduce loss of sunlight and enable views may never grow back naturally thus swapping one problem for another.
If taking this path it is important that you seek the advice of a qualified tree surgeon. We are happy to discuss this with you.

Crown Reduction

A Crown Reduction is reducing the height and spread of the tree by selectively cutting back to smaller branches. This process needs to be carefully managed in accordance with:
  1. The age of the tree.
  2. The species of the tree.
  3. The overall health of the tree.
During this process it is important to keep the natural framework of the tree and preserve as many of the leaf bearing branches as possible.

Crown Lifting

This is the process of removing the lower branches of the tree to raise the canopy.

Crown Thinning

Crown Thinning will not not affect the size and shape of the tree. As the name suggests it will thin the canopy allowing more light to pass through and reduce the trees resistance to wind. Branches are chosen selectively for balance and reducing hazards in order that the tree can lead a prolonged and healthy life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get A Quote

What if my tree has a TPO?

A TPO or "tree preservation order" or any tree within a conservation area will require permission from the Local Planning Authorirty (LPA).

This process can take up to six weeks.

Can I keep the wood Chippings?

Yes of course.

However, not all tree chippings are suitable for mulch, but we can advise you accordingly.

What happens to the larger branches?

We take the larger off cuts off site to be repurposed or incinerated if there is no use for them.

If you would like to keep the off cuts, that is absolutely fine too. We even offer a log splitting service if you have a wood burner.

How long does it take to season wood?

When wood is first cut it can have moisture levels of 60%.

To be considered good for burning it should be around 20% which can take between 6 and 12 months.
