Remove unsightly tree stumps and regain space in your garden...

Removing a tree stump is the final stage of permanent tree removal.

In many cases leaving the tree stump in the ground is not a problem, but removing it has the following benefits:

  • It removes a trip hazard and an eye sore.
  • Prevents root diseases and fungi appearing (e.g. the destructive Honey Fungus).
  • Stops new shoots from growing out of the stump if the root system is still alive.
  • The stump is ground out well below ground level, and in many cases the entire stump is removed making subsequent landscaping work much easier.

Stump grinding can be undertaken year round and causes minimal disruption to the surrounding ground surface.

If there is any risk to surrounding plants or lawn surface we will advise you prior to starting the work so you know exactly what to expect.

Access can be gained via a standard sized 3' garden gate and if that is not an option a fence panel and be temporarily removed to gain access.

After the stump has been ground down, the wood chippings are back filled into the hole where they rot and sink in.

What Is Stump Grinding

As the name suggests, stump grinding is the process of the tree stump being ground down using specialist plant called a stump grinder.

There are all different shapes and sizes but majority have a large rotating cutter that breaks up the wood below ground level. Any remnants of the trunk and major roots are ground until it is completely below the surface of the soil.

You are then left with a mixture of wood chip and soil that can be safely used to compost your garden or be used as a weed suppressant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump grinding cost?

Each job is unique as it will depend upon:

  1. The size of the stumps.
  2. The number of stumps.
  3. The height of the stumps above ground.
  4. The type of tree.
  5. How far down we need to take the stump to.
  6. Access and location of stumps.

We can normally provide a guide price over the phone, but often we will need to see the job to give an accurate cost.

How much waste will be produced?

This is completely dependent on the size of the stumps.

Stump grinding will leave a mixture of wood chip and soil.

This waste is used to refill the hole and will sink down and rot.

As long as there is no sign of root disease, the waste is safe to compost or spread on borders as a weed suppresant,
