Can razor wire be installed on site hoarding?

Razor wire can be installed subject to Section 164 of the Highways Act 1980:

  • Razor wire can be installed on land adjoining a public highway but must be at a minimum height of 2.4 meters above ground level and ‘must not cause a nuisance to humans or animals using the highway’.
  • Appropriate signage should be displayed warning the public that razor wire is in place.

How high can timber hoarding be?

Typically timber hoarding is 2.4 meters high and this is the most economic specification.

However, timber hoarding can be much higher with the following caveats:

  • Costs rise as the posts need to be dug in deeper, more materials are required and the labour costs increase.
  • There is increased exposure to wind.

Which timber specification is used for site hoarding?

The specifications are as follows:

  • For the posts C16 or C24 grade timber. C24 is graded to a higher standard so it can handle higher loads and wider spans. Both timbers are treated.
  • Softwood or hardwood 18mm plywood sheets are used for the site protected board.
  • 4 rails of 4" by 2" skirting is used to add strength to the hoarding with capping strips to prevent water ingress.

 

What is the best paint for plywood hoarding?

When painting the site hoarding, a two step process should be followed:

  1. Prime the plywood to prevent the paint from soaking in. Then leave to fully dry before applying the paint.
  2. Either use a water based acrylic-latex paint or an epoxy paint.
